Here is an early working example of what I'm intending to use GC for. Rendered in Cinema 4D.
Also using C4D “Hair” as grass, C4D native sky/light environment and Onyx Tree (very high polygon) conifer tree.

The building in the landscape is a quick study of the forms siituated in an environment that is somewhat like the actual building site. The building will need to be developed as time goes by with approvals and so on. I will eventually want to show the terrains next to the buildings in some fairly close-up views so I'm beginning to work on ways to combine several terrains in one render. For max accuracy and realism, I've used digital photos of the actual ground and rock walls on the building site to texture this terrain. They look fairly good and accurate from a distance but less so up close for now. I guess I'm going to have to make some really huge texture bitmaps. (Wishing there was a suitable procedural texture for this one.) This scene has 3 terrains with over 700,000 polygons and renders in about 7 minutes when the shadows are cached.

Next I'll need to figure out a way to get somewhat better accuracy in the actual terrain shape. Here I've approximated it in GC 1.3 as best I can – I'm still an amateur with GeoControl - then tweaked the heights and land forms in Cinema to come close to the actual site contours. Yet I do need to get better with GC to come a little closer from the beginning so that the erosion better corresponds to the actual final shapes of the terrain.

Many thanks to Cajomi for his help in getting me started.

Yeah, really a great render. I first thought that it is a photography! Thumbs up!!!

Thanks very much. All your comments are really appreciated. I'm glad to attempt to answer any questions but I don't know how much of it transfers over from C4D use to other software.

best to all,

Excellent looking work. I haven't tried using any GC terrains in C4D yet. Which formats are you using to import them? I only have C4D 8.5 so no option to add such lovely grass as yours. I'm currently trying to make a small harbour town and perhaps use C4D to get my buildings situated correctly on the terrains so I'm interested in any tips you can pass on.

Hi Kathye, Thanks for the comments. I used the normal map function out of GeoControl and into the C4D materials manager but I don't think you will have the normal map choice with 8.5. I think it was introduced in 9.1 or thereabouts. You can download the trial version of 10 and figure out how it works with Geocontrol. That is for the realistic look of the mountain/landscape terrains. If you can figure out how to get a normal may into your version of C4D, then be sure to use the Relief Object for the base terrain. Any other format (like .obj or .3ds) for the terrain will probably slow down your machine too much. Use a high res bit map on the relief object. Then apply the normal map as a separate material on the relief object for all the fine detail. That way you don't have a zillion polygons to move around and render.

For the grass you can use one of several free grass plugins - just google it. If you want more info just e-mail me here through the profile choices. Check this site for all the Cinema plugins ever made. www.c4dplugs.com

A wanted to make a llittle tutorial for C4D and GeoControl but I have waited because I don't completely understand it yet. Maybe I'll have to do it anyway!

Best,
