Just a thought here...
I think it might be nice to have an option for a texture map import in the Shader Settings/Texture Tab. For producing certain maps with details like soil, large rocks, angeled strata, small rocks depending on how close one chooses to make the terrain, small flora and so on. These maps can be mixed with the gradient maps and simple color mapping and produce fine details. The textures could work just like others with the blending features.
I think some very complex texture mapping would be nice allowing for easy to make detail work were some might not feel like using shaders all of the time in third party software.
The imports could be limited to bitmap, jpg, png and tiff i suppose.
i think games, orthographic maps for map making, science research etc. could benefit from this.
