I'd be nice to be able to overlay an image on top of the terrain, with adjustable transparency.

Yes, that would be very useful.
I am not sure, whether it will be in the first update. I am really late with the first bugfix.
But it will be sure in the second update, which will be released together with the Mac version.

I would like to see the image overlay working in such a way to where images can be placed on photoshop like blending modes, elevation based blending and based on fractal terrain distribution methods......

@Criss
For what would such options be needed?

No... not the photoshop-like blending modes... SORRY... just the elevation and fractal distribution methods... for example lets say you want to isolate a grass image over the terrain one could place that at a low elevation point and anything above can be dirt, rocks or snow image overlays etc. The fractal distribution can scatter rock texture overlays for example about the terrain... i hope i am making sense here...... :?

the image overlay is not ment as texturing or surfacing. It is ment as reference, when you try to build a new terrain with the brush.
You would load a landscape image, for example a middle earth map, and use it for comparison.

Oh... OK... i understand now... sorry... my misunderstanding... well then that is perfect... use the dynamic brush for tracing over terrain images... i like that idea alot...... :D

Great to see this feature on the upcoming release :)

I'm working on a terrain at the moment which uses this 'copying', transcription method.
