Just a couple of quick examples I did the other day in XSI. Thought I'd post these in case they're useful to anyone who's working with pre-rendered images and wants an alternative to Terragen. Adding the normal map is even simpler if you avoid following the usual instructions online on how to do it and just add the normal map node to the bump channel instead of messing around with the netview. Displacement is equally as simple, attached to the displacement on the material itself.
First one, normal map on its own. Since the latest build of GC2 stopped normal maps being created, I just took the heightmap into Photoshop and ran the normal map filter on it to create a regular tangent space map.

Second image, normal map + heightmap on a very low poly subdivided grid. High quality with very fast render times.
