In my on going pursuits for looking into a nice renderer to display GeoControl's power at work i found Modo 203 and it is just a great rendering system and for the three days of having it i came up with this quick test.
32 AA Samples, 1 hr render time, 6.56 Million Polygons, 1 Surface that is displaced with a 16 bit gray scale GeoControl map, GI, River mask is on a reflection channel and two color maps mixed with Photoshop-like layers.

Wow, that looks really good. What is the terrain size?

2048 Only. I plan on adding additional small scale displacement for the illusion of tiny flora/rocks but it is a learning process in Modo but it is possible. I might add another plane for lakes but i can easily use only lake masks to keep it simple.

If there was an option of GeoControl importing texture maps into the shader i can make the color mapping very complex as compared to this.

With a 2048 dispalcement no problems with memory?

None that i noticed. I have only a gigabyte of DDR-Ram and running a 2.8 P4 Processor. Everything ran fairly smooth, just my video card is old. A GForce FX 5200 so Open GL is not all that great.

That is really surprising. Try that discplacement with 3DSmax and you get memory allocation errors and it gets extrem slow.
Can you try it with 4096 terrain, may be two?

The thought had crossed my mind so i will indeed try that size or two of them. I will post the results sometime tomorrow.
Modo is just a very well written software. I can say it sets itself apart from all the others IMHO.

Alrighty, i rendered at 4096 and the details are improved a lot i think. I wanted to tile some terrains but i have yet to figure that out in Modo. Rendering time only added 5 minutes to the hour.

Great work Criss! Strangely, I prefer the first shot- the 2nd seems to smooth. I really like the surfaces on the first pic.

The details are absolutly correct!
I will have a look at modo!!

Now if only Modo had a atmosphere editor.

In terms of the colors only being smooth?
I imported some textures i made in Genetica for some additional details, simple really. The second one lacked it due to the fact Genetica can only render out 3,000 by 3,000 size and my terrain was at 4096.

Here is another one. I made the rivers transparent with fresnel and reflection but it is hard to see this from afar so i will have to do a close up soon. The rivers are funky at there tops but it's all just a test. I still can't figure out how to add another plain for lakes but i know there is a way.

Another one this time with lakes although i can not seem to isolate the lakes separately so i had to erase only the river mask parts in my photo editor. Is this feature missing in this build?

Yes, that is missing. But if you only want lakes, simply set the springs only in the middle of lakes.

Ah, i see. No worries then. I will use your suggestion for the time being.
BTW, this latest render is only 2048. What i did was increased the sub-division several times so i think this increased the fine details in the terrain map that was displaced. To me it looks sharper then all the others.

BTW:
That terrain is xlt!!

Here is a fine example of using some nice shaders and extreme sediment filters. The formations and rich colors turned out nice i think.
