This is a terrain I made using GC2 and Photoshop. It represents 300 x 300 kilometers of area in the game and 4 different climate zones. I used 16 different heightmaps that were 16 bit tifs that were then combined in Photoshop. I reimported the whole terrain to GC to make selections for the materials. There are 12 separate tiled images used for the material, you can't really see them all here, but it is designed to work while flying over and landing on the surface. The amount of tiling changes with the alititude.

How did you make transitions from one climate to other?

I was trying to blend two greyscale heightmaps in photoshop and it works quite well. Did you manage to make splat maps in GC? I was trying to do it using selections, but without success.
